The next chapter: Cycling Across Africa for Education

It’s time to give back. Almost two years ago I set off from my hometown in Germany and started cycling eastwards. No real plan. I wasn’t sure if I will be gone for a few weeks, months, or decades. It might be the latter.

The Tibetan Plateau, the desert in Oman, the steppe in Mongolia, or the canyons of Afghanistan are landscapes which I will never forget, but the people I met on the way, welcoming me to their country, and even their homes, are what really made this journey special.

These interactions & their hospitality have changed my life, and now I want to change the lives of others – with your help.

THE PLAN:

In late August ’25 I will be setting of to cycle the length of Africa – from its northernmost point in Tunisia to its southernmost point in South Africa. On the way I will be crossing the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara Desert, the rainforests of Western/Central Africa, and anything of interest I find on the way. The map above is just a rough draft, because you know me, I like to go with the flow. How long will it take me to cover those 20.000+ kilometres? No idea, probably at least 1.5 years. Also, the trip won’t conclude in South Africa – after I reach Cape Agulhas, I will be heading north again, towards Kunda.

About THE PROJECT:

Kunda is a village in Western Rwanda, a Central-African nation with a population of 14 million people. A small country, where some major atrocities happened in the past: The Rwandan Genocide during the civil war in 1994 claimed the lives of over half a million people, a tragedy which resulted in countless of children growing up in orphanages. One of those kids was Emmanuel, founder of the Kunda Village School. His own struggle of financing his education drove him to launch this combined primary school & nursery, which provides food & education to over 200 orphans and children in the area.

For these efforts the school partnered with 264.education to spread the word & collect donations, and with whom I will be fundraising with. 264, a name raising awareness about the 264 million children in the world not going to school, is a registered charity in Germany, and 100% of every donation will go directly to the cause. All their operations and finances are completely transparent. For more information about 264, check out their FAQ.

The goal of the fundraiser? Let’s start with $10.000 – money goes a long way in Rwanda. $35 is enoug to feed a child with breakfeast and lunch for a whole month, while providing them with health insurance and covering costs of the school uniform and utensils.

Feel free to give what you can, any amount will help!

I’m confident we can reach this goal, and once achieved it can be increased, or we can support one of the many other great projects!

Thank you!

P.S.: Spreading the word with family & friends is also a great way to support the cause!
